The monthly USDA supply/demand report (Th. May 10)indicated an increase of 4 million planted corn acres over last year and a 19 bushel/acre jump in average yield due to early planting progress. This resulted in record corn production of 14.79 billion bushels and a stocks/usage ratio of 13.7% which compares to production of 12.358 last year and a 6.7% stocks/usage ratio (second lowest on record). Both numbers as well as new crop ending stocks of 1.881 billion bushels were larger than trade expectations. This pressured corn prices late in the week and could keep prices on the defensive, barring weather problems.
